Rex was selected to participate as one of the three chosen choreographers in the 2016 New York Choreographic Institute, an Institute founded by Peter Martins, ballet master in chief of the New York City Ballet. It was at the 2016 Spring sessions that his collaboration with composer Jared Miller on a new work gave birth to 'Echo Syncopations'. Rex currently dances with Smuin Contemporary American Ballet and after creating two new works for their Choreographic Showcase at the ODC theater he will creating a new work for their 2016 Christmas Ballet.
As a founding member of Capital Dance Project, he created two new works for the 'Behind the Barre' performance in 2015 and one for the 2016 series in which his collaboration with Sacramento based artist Raphael Delgado created 'Portrait', a ballet set to organ concertos by Handel and Widor and performed with three of Delgado's specially commissioned large scale paintings.
Born in London, Rex Wheeler trained at The Royal Ballet School and Elmhurst School for Dance. As a student Rex performed with Birmingham Royal Ballet and on several occasions for the Royal Family. Mr. Wheeler joined Slovak National Ballet in 2009 followed by Sacramento Ballet in 2010 where he choreographed many new works for the company creations program and for the School of Sacramento Ballet. Rex most recently created 'Lenten Rose' for Richmond Ballet in 2015 and has created many new works for Utah Regional Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Crooked Tree Arts Center, Mid-Columbia Ballet and for Ballet Academy East.
Rex was commissioned to choreograph 'French Horn Rebellion’s music video 'Swing into It' in 2014 and was selected to dance in the National Choreographer’s Initiative for three consecutive years.
